Merrill L. Carlsmith became the first to defend the title successfully. He defeated William D. Higgins, of San Francisco, by 3 and 2 at the Sea Island Golf Club, Sea Island, Ga. This was the third appearance in the Championship for the 57-year-old Hilo attorney and the first for Higgins, also 57.

Egon F. Quittner, Jenkintown, Pa., defeated Maurice R. Smith, Charlotte, N.C., in the first round after nine extra holes, an overtime record for the Championship by three holes.
