Gene Andrews, 57, of Hacienda Heights, Calif., won the Senior
Amateur Championship by defeating James Ferrie, of Indian
Welts, Calif., 1 up at the California Golf Club of San Francisco,
South San Francisco, Calif.
Andrews was a former Amateur Public Links Champion and a
former member of the Walker Cup Team. He was the first Senior
Amateur Champion ever to have won another USGA Championship
and was the second former Walker Cup player to have done so.
Frederick J. Wright, Jr., the 1956 Champion, was a member
of the 1923 Walker Cup Team; Andrews was on the 1961 Team.
Andrews won two extra hole matches, defeating Robert E.
Cochran, of Normandy, Mo., in 21 holes, and Ernest Pieper,
Jr., of San Jose, Calif., in 19. He won the final by sinking
a 27-foot putt on the final hole.
Curtis Person, Sr., Champion in 1968 and 1969, lost in the
first round to Truman Connell, of Delray Beach, Fla. Bruce
N. McCormick, of San Gabriel, Calif., was medalist with 147.
The entry of 683 was a record.
