1971
The 1971 Championship drew what was probably the best field
in the history of the Senior Amateur, and it was won by Tom
Draper, 57, of Troy, Mich. Draper defeated Ernest Pieper,
Jr., of San Juan Bautista, Calif., 3 and 1, in the final at
the Sunnybrook Golf Club, Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
Among players competing for the first time were William
Hyndman, III, who had been runner-up in the British Amateur
in 1969 and 1970. Hyndman was eliminated by Pieper in the
semi-final round. Draper was 1 up on Pieper after playing
fine bunker shots on holes 9, 13, and 14, birdied the 152-yard
15th with a tee shot 30 inches from the hole to go 2 up, and
hit a 2-iron 15 feet from the hole on the 183-yard 17th to
win another hole and end the match.
Draper also defeated Bob Cochran, of St. Louis, a former
Walker Cup player and medalist at 148, and Truman Connell,
of Boynton Beach, Fla., the current American Seniors Champion.
Draper also defeated William F. Colm, of Pebble Beach, Calif.,
in the semi-final round. Gene Andrews, the 1970 Champion,
did not defend.
