Lewis W. Oehmig, 56, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., won the
Senior Amateur Championship at the Sharon Golf Club, Sharon
Center, Ohio, in his initial attempt, beating Ernest Pieper,
San Juan Bautista, Calif., on the 20th hole. This was the
second successive year that Pieper was runner-up. Tom Draper,
the defending Champion, failed to qualify for match play.
Three of Oehmig's victories were extra hole matches, and
in each he had to make a sizable putt or hit his approach
shot close to the hole. He defeated Edward L. Meister, Jr.,
Willoughby, Ohio, on the 19th hole with a birdie; Bill Hyndman,
Huntingdon Valley, Pa., on the 20th hole by making an 18-foot
putt, and Pieper on the 20th hole of the final round after
squaring the match on the 18th with a 30-foot birdie putt.
He also beat Timothy Holland, Wenham, Mass., 3 and 2, in the
first round, and Curtis Person, Memphis, Tenn., 2 and 1, in
the quarter-finals.
Person, Senior Champion in 1968 and 1969, played an impeccable
round against Oehmig, but caught him on a day when Oehmig
shot 15 pars and two birdies. Hyndman was the medalist with
71-74-145. In his match with Oehmig, Hyndman was two up after
nine holes and was still one up after 17. On the 18th Oehmig
hit his approach shot four feet from the flagstick and made
his birdie, sending the match into extra holes. On the 20th
he holed an 18-footer to beat Hyndman. Senior amateur golf
continues to burgeon, with the result that there were 617
entries and another strong field.
