1975
William F. Colm became the third Californian to win a USGA
Championship during 1975. He defeated fellow-Californian Stephen
Stimac, 4 and 3, in the final of the Senior Amateur Championship
at the Carmel Valley Golf and Country Club, Carmel, Calif.
Players from 37 states competed for the Championship, but
when it was over the winner was the man who traveled the shortest
distance-nine miles. Colm lives in Pebble Beach. He had been
a semi-finalist in 1971, and in 1970, 1972, and 1973 he lost
in the first round.
Stimac, of Walnut Creek, had never advanced beyond the second
round before, but he kept winning his matches, including his
quarter-final round against former Walker Cupper Bob Cochran,
which went 19 holes.
It was a week of upsets; two former Champions Dale Morey,
of High Point, N.C., and Lew Oehmig, from Lookout Mountain,
Tenn., were eliminated in the first round. William Hyndman,
III, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., who won the Championship in
1973, was defeated in the second round, after defeating Oehmig
in the first.
Hyndman did set a record, however; he was medalist for the
third time, shooting 73-70- 143. His 143 tied the 36-hole
qualifying record score, set by Curtis Person, Sr., in 1966.
In the final round, Colm was 4-up after nine holes, as Stimac
had six bogies and couldn't win a hole, even when Colm bogied
three times. The first four holes of the home nine were halved
in par, then Stimac won his first hole with a par on the short
14th to stand three down with four to play.
Colm, however, closed the match out on the next hole, striking
a six-iron to within five feet of the cup and holing the putt
for a birdie-3 on the 363 -yard hole. There were 737 entries.
