William C. Campbell, 56, of Huntington, W. Va., the 1964
Amateur Champion, won the Senior Amateur Championship by defeating
Lewis Oehmig, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., 2 and 1, in the
final at the Chicago Golf Club, Wheaton, Ill. Campbell became
the only golfer to have won both the Amateur and Senior Amateur
titles.
Oehmig, twice Senior Amateur Champion, was playing in the
final match for the fifth time. Campbell and Dale Morey, of
High Point, N. C., were co-medalists with scores of 143, equalling
the 36-hole record held previously by four other golfers.
Morey lost in the second round, 3 and 2, to Allan Sussel.
Campbell eliminated Oren Shiro, 2 and 1; Dr. Edgar Updegraff,
6 and 5; shot 69 in a 1-up quarter-final victory over Les
Fowler; and defeated Robert Willits in the semi-finals, 8
and 6. Oehmig defeated Dick Lytle, 5 and 4; Kenneth Weavil,
4 and 3; Wally Sezna, 4 and 3; and Sussel, 1 up, in the semi-finals.
In the final, Oehmig won the first hole with a par and Campbell
the second hole with a birdie. The match remained even until
the ninth hole. Campbell went 1 up with a par to Oehmig's
double bogey. On the 17th, Oehmig was still 1 down with two
to play. He was in good position off the tee, but Campbell
drove his ball into a fairway bunker.
Campbell could pitch out only 80 yards, but Oehmig's shot
carried over the green. He chipped well past the hole and
three-putted for a double bogey 6. Campbell played his third
shot onto the green and two-putted for a 5 to win the Championship.
The Chicago Golf Club, one of the five USGA Charter Member
Clubs, was the host to its 10th USGA national or international
competition. The Championship received a record of 1,023 entries,
exceeding the previous high of 930 in 1978.
