Jackie Cummings, 55, holed a six-foot downhill birdie putt
on the 16th hole and defeated Bobby Clark, 3 and 2, at Desert
Forest Country Club, in Carefree, Arizona. Cummings, of Tuscaloosa,
Alabama, went ahead with a par 4 on the 10th hole, and won
the 15th hole with a par, then closed out the match by scoring
the only birdie of his round on the 16th hole.
On his route to the final, Cummings defeated Clarence Moore,
of Winnsboro, South Carolina, the 1988 champion, 2 and 1 in
the quarter-finals, and won his semi-final match over Rick
Jones, from Youngstown, Ohio, by 3 and 2.
Clark, 56, of Asheville, North Carolina, was extended to
the 18th hole or beyond in two of his five matches. His toughest
match was against Joe Simpson, of San Diego, California, the
1989 finalist, whom he defeated on the 21st hole. Bo Williams,
of Ocala, Florida, the defending champion, was runner-up,
at 151, after 36 holes of stroke play qualifying, but lost
in the first round of match play.
