Clarence Moore, 63, of Winnsboro, S.C., took four consecutive
holes early in the match and went on to defeat Robert Harris,
of Edina, Minn., 6 and 4, in the final at The Loxahatchee
Club, in Jupiter, Fla. It was the second Senior Amateur title
for Moore, whose final margin of victory was the largest in
the 38-year history of the championship.
Moore led after five holes, 3-up, and from that point was
never seriously threatened. He recorded three birdies on the
first nine and was just one over par when the match ended
at the 14th hole.
In the semi-finals, Moore advanced by defeating John Stieneker,
of Dallas, Texas, 1 up, while Harris eliminated Dick Goerlich,
of Tampa, Fla., 3 and 2.
Two players shot 7-over-par 151 to share medalist honors:
Bob Hullender, 55, of San Antonio, Texas, who just two years
earlier had undergone artificial hip replacement surgery,
and John Proctor, of Carrollton, Texas. Neither, however,
was able to advance past the third round. Proctor lost a first-round
match to Jim Thigpen, of Fort Worth, Texas, 2 and 1, while
Hullender won twice before losing to Goerlich, 3 and 2.
