Curtis Person Sr., of Memphis, Tenn., became the second
to defend the title successfully when he defeated David Goldman,
Sr., of Dallas 1 up, at the Wichita Country Club, Wichita,
Kans. Merrill Carlsmith, of Hilo, Hawaii, won successive Championships
in 1962-63.
For the second consecutive year Person barely qualified
for the match play phase. His 36-hole score of 154 was one
stroke under the cutoff. The par-3 holes made the difference
in the final match; Person won three of the four with pars.
The match was even after 10 holes, then Person won the par-3
11th when Goldman missed the green. They halved the remainder
of the holes with Person holing a 10-foot putt for par on
the 18th. Goldman was medalist with 146. |
