1977
Dale Morey, of High Point, N.C., became the fifth man to
win a second Senior Amateur Championship when he defeated
Lewis W. Oehmig, the defending Champion, 4 and 3, in the final
round at the Salem Country Club, Peabody, Mass. Oehmig was
from Lookout Mountain, Tenn.
It was the second time that Morey defeated Oehmig in the
final. In 1974 Morey won 4 and 2. Morey was also medalist
with 72-71-143, equalling the record low score for the qualifying
round. Oehmig was in the final for the fourth time, a record.
He also won twice, in 1972 and 1976.
Three of the four semi-finalists were former Champions.
Oehmig defeated Bill Hyndman, the 1973 Champion, in 19 holes
in a semi-final match after being 3-down. In the other semi-final,
Morey defeated Harry Welch, of Salisbury, N.C., 5 and 4.
Morey won three of the first five holes of the final match,
and was 2 up after eight. On the ninth hole, Oehmig reached
the green in regulation, but Morey was 30 yards short. Morey's
approach shot hit the flagstick, however, and dropped alongside
the hole. He made his par.
Oehmig three-putted to go 3 down with nine holes to play.
He could not recover. The entry of 797 was short of the record
833 established the previous year. |
