Bill Bosshard defeated Morris Beecroft, 61, of Newport News, Va., in the final match, 5 and 4, to become the youngest champion in the history of the Senior Amateur.

At the time of his victory, Bosshard, of Copley, Ohio, was less than four months past his 55th birthday. Jackie, Cummings, the 1990 champion, was previously the youngest Senior Amateur champion.

Neither finalist played exceptionally well in the championship match. Bosshard won the first hole with a bogey, and at the 13th hole he won with a double bogey six after Beecroft needed four putts. Earlier in the match, Beecroft had three-putted on three other occassions.

After Beecroft hit his tee shot on the par-3 14th hole close to the flagstick, Bosshard matched it. Both players made birdie to close the match.

Bosshard advanced to the final by defeating former champion Clarence Moore, 4 and 3; while Beecroft eliminated Dick Goerlich, of Tampa, Fla., 1 up.

With the players fighting a week of cold, blustery weather, the scores were unusually high. Moore and Beecroft were co-medalists with 36-hole totals of 10-over-par 150, the second highest score in the history of the championship.
