Defending
Champion Richardson
Takes
First-Round Lead
At
2004 USGA
Senior
Amateur
Los
Angeles, Calif. - Defending champion Kemp Richardson recorded
the only sub-par round to take a one-stroke lead after the
first round of stroke play at the 2004 USGA Senior Amateur
Championship, being conducted at the par-70, 6,491-yard Bel-Air
Country Club.
A
total of 75 players finished their first round Sunday morning
after play was suspended at 6:28
p.m. Saturday due to
darkness.
Richardson,
58, of Laguna Niguel,
Calif.,
recorded four birdies and three bogeys en route to a 1-under-par
69. After getting off to a good start with a three-foot birdie
putt on the second hole, he made long birdie putts on the
fifth and seventh holes. After three bogeys on the back nine,
at the 10th, 14th and 15th holes, he made a five-footer for
birdie on the par-3 16th hole.
"I'm
driving pretty well and putting pretty well," said Richardson, who also won the 2001
Senior Amateur. "It's always good anytime you can come out
and shoot 69."
The
back nine holes at Bel-Air proved treacherous for many players.
No one finished under par and just one, Billy
Clagett,
58, of Austin,
Texas,
finished at even par on the back nine.
"It's
a good nine holes," Richardson
said. "If you hit it
well, you'll be fine."
Finishing
one shot back with even-par 70s were Fred Cox, 63, of North
Palm Beach, Fla., Mark Bemowski, 58, of Mukwonago, Wis.,
and Kent Christopher, 58, of Farmington, Utah.
"This
is a wonderful shot-makers' course," said Bemowski, the 2002
USGA Senior Amateur runner-up. "But the greens are perplexing.
It's sometimes hard to tell whether you're uphill or downhill."
Johnny
Stevens, 62, of Wichita, Kan., and Steven Hakes, 55,
of San Diego,
Calif.,
both of whom finished their second rounds Sunday morning,
each recorded 1-over-par 71s.
Clagett, the stroke-play medalist
at the 2002 Senior Amateur, finished three shots back, as
did Jerry Cundari, 64, of Portland, Ore., and Chip Stewart,
57, of Dallas, Texas. Also in the hunt after 2-over-par 73s
are 1998 and 2000 champion Bill Shean Jr. of Hinsdale, Ill.,
Ronald Vanelli, 56, of Edison, N.J., and Jack Vardaman,
64, of Washington, D.C.
For
Shean, who is playing in his final USGA Senior Amateur before
retiring from the national golf scene, the round got off to
an interesting start. After hitting his tee shot on the par-5,
482-yard first hole far right, he hit a 7-wood into a bunker
short of the green. He then hit to within two feet and made
his birdie putt.
"I
was as nervous as a little bird on the first tee," Shean said.
"I hit it so far right I was almost in the 18th fairway, and
I still made birdie. I thought, 'well, I stole one there.'
"
Other
notables included two-time USA Walker Cupper Marty West, 56,
of Rockville, Md., who is five shots back at 4-over-par 74;
2002 USGA Senior Amateur champion Greg Reynolds, 57, of Grand
Blanc, Mich., (5-over-par 75); four-time USA Walker Cupper
Bob Lewis Jr., 60, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, (7-over-par 77);
1972 U.S. Amateur champion Vinny Giles, 61, of Richmond, Va.,
who finished at 8-over 78, and 1999 Senior Amateur winner
Bill Ploeger, 64, of Columbus, Ga. (9-over 79).
The
second round of stroke play will be played Sunday before the
field is trimmed to the low 64 scorers who will advance to
match play. The championship runs through Thursday's 18-hole
final match.
The USGA Senior Amateur is one of 13 national championships
conducted annually by the United States Golf Association,
10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
