Thomas C. Robbins
Thomas C. Robbins, 65, of West End, N.C., became the oldest
winner by defeating John W. Dawson, 55, of Palm Desert, Calif.,
2 and 1, at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Pebble Beach,
Calif., in September-October.
J. Clark Espie, 59, of Indianapolis, Ind., the defending
Champion, established a new qualifying record with a one-under-par
71 but lost to Robbins in the semi-final, 2 up. Eight players
tied at 79 for the last of the 32 qualifying places.
Chick Evans, 68, of Chicago, who had played in all four
Championships, was among the qualifiers for match play for
the first time and won two matches. |
