William D. Higgins
William D. Higgins, 58, of San Francisco, won the Senior
Amateur Championship at the Waverley Country Club, Portland,
Ore., after losing in the final round in 1963. Higgins birdied
the last two holes to win his semi-final match 1 up from David
Goldman, Sr., of Dallas. He then beat Edward Murphy, a member
of the host club, by 2 and 1 in the final.
Merrill L. Carlsmith, of Hilo, Hawaii, was seeking an unprecedented
third straight Championship but he was defeated in the second
round by Ralph Swan, of Vancouver, Wash., by 3 and 2. The
format was altered to 36 holes of qualifying at the site to
determine 32 players for match play. A-L. (Jim) Miller, 71,
turned in a remarkable qualifying performance to earn the
medal with scores of 74-76- 150. |
