Bo Williams parred the first extra hole, at Lochinvar Golf
Club, in Houston, Texas, and defeated Joe Simpson, the father
of Scott Simpson, the 1987 U.S. Open champion, in the final.
The win was his second. He also won the Senior Amateur in
A 60-year-old car dealer from Ocala, Florida, Williams birdied
two of the first eight holes, took a four-hole lead, but faltered
a bit on the second nine and fell back to even after 16 holes.
They halved the final two holes of the regulation 18 before
Simpson three-putted the 19th.
Simpson actually was the more accurate of the two, hitting
15 greens in regulation, but Williams one-putted eight greens
and chipped in twice.
At the end of the day Williams had but 26 putts for the
19 holes. Five strokes off the qualifying pace set by Frank
Tenfel (147), Williams won five matches to reach the final.
He won two of his early matches by scores of 3 and 2, and
two more by 2 and 1 margins.
