Bo Williams, 57, of Ocala, Florida, defeated John Harbottle
of Tacoma, Washington, 3 and 2, in the final at Interlachen
Country Club in Edina, Minnesota. William Hyndman, III, who
won the championship in 1973 and 1983, shot 149 in qualifying
to earn medalist honors, the fourth time he had won or shared
the qualifying medal in this championship.
Hyndman was eliminated in the quarter-finals by William
Ludwig of Lees Summit, Missouri, 5 and 4. Williams had to
play the 17th hole only once on his to the final.
In the fourth round he defeated Robert Marks of Elkhorn,
Wisconsin, 2 and 1. Williams downed Ludwig, 3 and 2, in the
semi-final round to earn his way into the final. Harbottle
was extended to the 18th hole twice. He edged Joe Eason of
Houston, 1 up, in his opening match and defeated Ed Tutwiler
of Indianapolis by the same margin in the third round.
A 4-and-3 victory over Marshall Trammell of Nashville, Tennessee,
in the semi-finals put Harbottle in the final. Harbottle holed
a 10-foot putt to earn a half on the first hole and sank a
birdie of the some length at the second to go 1 up; but he
had four bogeys and a double bogey over the next six holes.
Four up at that point, Williams held on for the victory. The
USGA accepted a record 1,362 entries for the championship.
