William C. Campbell

William C. Campbell, 57, of Huntington, West Virginia, won his second consecutive Senior Amateur Championship by scoring a 3 and 2 victory over Keith K. Compton, 64, of San Antonio, Texas, the 1978 champion. The event was held on the Cascades Course of the Virginia Hot Springs Golf & Tennis Club, in Hot Springs, Virginia.

Campbell joined Merrill Carlsmith (1962-63) and Curtis Person (1968-69) as the only players to successfully defend the Senior Amateur title. For the second consecutive year, Campbell was also medalist, with a 36 hole score of 147, three over par.

Campbell was three under par in his first round match, three over par in the second round and one over par in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, his match with Dr. Ed Updegraff was even through nine holes. Both players birdied the 12th hole, a par 5, to remain even. Campbell then birdied the 13th from 10 feet, the 15th from 12 feet, and closed out the match with a six-foot putt for a birdie at the 16th.

Campbell was two over par. Campbelll won three of the first four holes of the final math and was never caught. The USGA received 1,000 entries, short of the record 1,023 set in 1979.
