Lewis Oehmig

Lewis Oehmig, 69, of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, become the oldest person ever to win a USGA Championship and the first to win the Senior Amateur Championship three times when he defeated Edwin Hopkins, 61, of Whitney, Texas, on the 20th hole at Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club on Isle of Palms, South Carolina.

Hopkins was medalist with 143, one stroke off the qualifying record. Hopkins had his sternest challenge on his way to the final in the third round when he defeated Ira Templeton of Hixson, Tennessee, on the 20th hole.

In the semi-final, Hopkins eliminated Dempsey Ballard of San Antonio, Texas, 2 and 1. Oehmig was stretched to extra holes twice on his way to the final-in the first round he defeated Charles Sullivan of Peabody, Massachusetts, on the 20th hole and, in the second round he defeated Chris Kappas of Ponta Vedre, Florida, on the 20th hole. Oehmig defeated Clifford Taylor of Spring Lake, Michigan, 2 and 1, in the semi-final.

Hopkins won the first hole of the final but Oehmig won the second, fourth and fifth holes to take a two-hole lead. Hopkins won the 12th, 13th and 14th to regain the lead and had a chance to win the match on the 17th but his putt for a winning par slid past the hole.

Oehmig sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th to send the match to extra holes. The 19th hole was halved with pars. Oehmig won the match on the 20th hole when Hopkins's pitch from behind the green did not hold the green and he settled for bogey. The USGA accepted a record 1,345 entries for the Championship.
