Frederick J. Wright, Jr.
Frederick J. Wright, Jr., 58, of the Oakley Country Club,
Watertown, Mass., a member of the 1923 Walker Cup Team, became
the second Senior Amateur Champion by defeating J. Clark Espie,
57, of Indianapolis, Ind., 4 and 3, at the Somerset Country
Club, St. Paul, Minn., in August, 1956.
The medalist was Weller Noble, 65, of Berkley, Calif., who
scored a two-over-par 72, the same score which won the medal
the first year.
The defending champion, J. Wood Platt, lost in the third
round to Wright. The entry dropped to 282. The qualifying
limit fell on 10 players tied at 79, also the same score as
in the first year, for the last four places.
In the first round Thomas C. Robbins, of Mamaroneck, N.Y.,
went 21 holes to defeat Perry T. Taylor, Huntington, W. Va.,
the longest match thus far.
