Merrill L. Carlsmith
Merrill L. Carlsmith became the first to defend the title
successfully. He defeated William D. Higgins, of San Francisco,
by 3 and 2 at the Sea Island Golf Club, Sea Island, Ga. This
was the third appearance in the Championship for the 57-year-old
Hilo attorney and the first for Higgins, also 57.
Egon F. Quittner, Jenkintown, Pa., defeated Maurice R. Smith,
Charlotte, N.C., in the first round after nine extra holes,
an overtime record for the Championship by three holes.
A new all-match play format was introduced. The original
entry of 494 was reduced by Sectional Qualifying to 128 for
the Championship proper. On Friday, the only day of two rounds,
players were permitted to use automotive transportation for
the first time under original conditions of a USGA Championship.
